Following the invasion of South Korea on 25 June, the United Nations Security Council adopted Resolution 83 and authorized member states to provide military assistance to South Korea.

The vote in favour was because the USSR, which could have vetoed the resolution, had made an error in boycotting the proceedings in protesting at the Chinese Nationalists on Taiwan island, and not the Chinese Communists in control of mainland China, assuming China’s seat on the Security Counci.

By 1 October 1950, General MacArthur's UN Command (UNC) forces had pushed the North Korean People's Army (KPA) back over the 38th parallel with the South Korean army (ROK) in pursuit. MacArthur had publically demanded the KPA's unconditional surrender and on 7 October, the UNC followed the ROK's forces northwards.

Hitler committed suicide on 30 April 1945 and Reichspräsident Grand Admiral Karl Dönitz, who had been President of the Third Reich for a week, travelled to General Eisenhower's HQ at Reims in France, and, in the presence of senior officers from Britain, America, Russia and France, surrendered unconditionally on 7 May 1945.

In January 1900, the Boer War in South Africa was going badly for the British.

Artefact

This woollen tunic was worn by a soldier of a Grenadier company of the 87th Foot during the Peninsular War. It is stamped and dated 1805 on the inside and is one of only four British tunics of this type in the world and is the best sample of the four.

The tunic was bought in a Paris auction in 1954 by the Royal Irish Fusiliers Old Comrades Association who subsequently donated it to the Royal Irish Fusiliers Museum where it is on permanent display.

Artefact

This khaki Service Dress, belt and beret belonged to a Warrant Officer, or Sergeant Major in the 2nd Battalion of the Ulster Defence Regiment which was based in the City and County of Armagh. One of several posts held by this Warrant Officer in 2 UDR was that of Company Sergeant Major to a Part Time company. In that capacity he organised and attended many funerals of the female and male soldiers of 2 UDR who were murdered by terrorists.

President Woodrow Wilson addressed a joint session of the United States Congress on 2 April 1917 and asked Congress to declare war on Germany. He cited Germany's unrestricted submarine warfare and its enticing Mexico into alliance against the United States as justification.

On 4 April, the US Senate voted to support the declaration and the House of Representatives voted to support the Declaration of War against Germany on 6 April 1917.

The USA later declared war on Austria-Hungary on 7 December 1917.
